Spring in the City

by Jacqueline Garcia

The following is a poem I wrote in honor of spring arriving and how different that experience is for those who live in the city. Many cities don’t have plants that the average person can see in their daily life. I hope people will read this and consider visiting a place with more nature and wildlife to appreciate. Nature is a beautiful thing, and it is something that humans largely take for granted. Going outside helps to relieve stress, and it can be a serious mood booster. So during this upcoming break, try going outside and breathing in some fresh air – even if it’s only for a couple of minutes per day.

Spring in the City

They say spring is the season of rebirth and growth

The weather changes and flowers bloom

But where will I see them both

The city, so large, there is no room

In my dreams, I hear the wind whistle in my ear

I see the flowers and plants stretching for miles

The sun covers the land, everything is clear

This is what it means to be happy, to be free

Dreams don’t last, gone in the blink of an eye

Surrounded by cars and strangers

Buildings cover the sky, hiding nature from the bustling crowd

Spring is something overlooked in the eyes of the city

The city is a new planet on Earth, one step inside is a new dimension

Where are the flowers, the wind, the sunlight, and everything else I’ve ever known

I look around for the view of my dreams, but there’s nothing in the city

People stare and walk away, turning a blind eye to my despair

They say that dreams are a false hope, always out of reach

Why have a spring break when spring to them doesn’t mean what it does to me

Staying in the city is a force pulling away from nature

Take time to step back, to be free and happy, simply to be
