February's Teacher of the Month

by Michaya Victor

Mr. Cooper is the February teacher of the month. Mr. Pervis (Coach) Cooper uses his sense of humor and charisma to engage his students. Mr. Cooper says the most satisfying part of his job is that he had the opportunity to shape and mold the future.  Mr. Cooper has been teaching since 2005 and every one of those years he has spent at Tucker. For about ten years he coached basketball along with Coach Hartry. He also coached Softball for about two years.

As a child, Mr. Cooper went to school in Dekalb County from the sixth grade onward. Looking back, he says one of his favorite parts of going to school in Dekalb was that he, "went to school with the world.” That opportunity helped Mr. Cooper become a more rounded person. Mr. Cooper was part of the basketball team in high school. He was an excellent student, but he said he had a smart mouth that sometimes got him sent to the principal's office. Mr. Cooper first realized he wanted to be a teacher while he was in high school. He was in advanced classes and his teammates often asked him for help. Helping his teammates understand something that their teachers could not help them understand made him feel accomplished.

In his free time, Mr. Cooper enjoys basketball, tennis, golf, and bowling. He also enjoys making people happy. However, he says if there was a class on being lazy, he would be the best teacher in that course.
